At Brighton College Bangkok we acknowledge that pupils who are learning English as an additional language have skills and knowledge similar to English-speaking pupils, but need our support to fully participate in the regular school curriculum.
Therefore, we provide work that meets their needs, but also provide language support in the form of visual aids, use of symbols and pictures, gestures, demonstrations, paired working and buddies.
The importance of the ‘silent period’ in the emergent language phase is recognised and so pupils are encouraged to set the pace of their oral contributions and degree of participation. In some cases, EAL staff provide additional support for the pupil in the classroom or the pupil may be withdrawn for specific language input as necessary.
